Pepper Spray Sends Robber Running

March 3, 2011. Derry, New Hampshire Police reported that another store robbery was thwarted by simple pepper spray.
A man walked into convenient store in Derry, NH and demanded cash from the store owner. The store owner sprayed the would-be robber in the face with pepper spray instead.

What happened next illustrates how pepper spray affects people's physiology, reflexes and behavior. Read on...
According to WMUR channel 9 that reported the story here:

"Store owner Sumant Patel, however, said he wasn't nervous because a similar robbery four months ago prompted someone to give him a gift.

�I wasn't scared,� Patel said. �My friend gave me pepper spray, 'so that you can save yourself.'�
Patel said he put the pepper spray to good use and sent the would-be robber running out the door.

Patel gave the police a description of the man's car, a dark gray Nissan, which is very similar to a car that wrecked on English Range Road just minutes after the attempted robbery.

The car, which police said was speeding, struck a utility pole and brought wires down across the road."

Here you have it:
When hit with pepper spray a person is seriously disoriented:
- it's hard to open the eyes, it's hard to see what's around, some report nearly complete blackout;
- it's hard to breathe, pepper spray dilates membranes in nasal passages that may restrict air flow into the lungs;
- sharp acute pain does not allow to concentrate on anything, everything is burning and demands immediate relief as first priority.

Tell me if this is a right condition to do anything? Rob a store? Fight someone? Rape somebody? Drive a car? -- No way.
The would-be robber could not continue with the robbery, tried to flee in a car and crashed it into a pole.
He was apprehended shortly after and sent to a hospital from the car accident scene.

Pepper spray in the face throws maybe a little monkey wrench into the cogs of a crime being committed but it's surely a powerful one to make ti stop altogether.

Kudos to Sumant Patel, the store owner, who was prepared (got his pepper spray in advance and kept it handy) and cool enough to deploy it when he had a chance.

Man Defends His Property With Bear Repellent Pepper Spray

A homeowner in DeKalb county got his house air conditioning units stolen right from his back yard. Not once but two times in a row. Mind you, those were not some window A/C units, no, we are talking two stationary units bolted to the cement foundation next to his house -- heavy stuff.

After the first crime, Roby Dail, the homeowner in the story, replaced two stolen units and put a steel case around them. In a few months the A/C units got stolen again. After the same crime was committed second time, Mr. Dail also installed an alarm, a video surveillance camera watching the cage with the A/C units inside and got himself some potent pepper spray.

And if you guessed that the thieves came for his air conditioners one more time -- you got it right, they did.
This is what happened next: Read on..."...At 3:21 Wednesday morning, Dail and his wife woke to the wailing of their alarm system. After the three incidents last year, the family had a metal cage placed around their air conditioning units and wired it to trigger an alarm and surveillance camera.

Roby Dail witnessed two men pulling open the doors to the cage in an attempt to get to the units. With the video camera rolling, Dail ran outside and challenged the men, who were ignoring the alarm that could be heard three houses away.

Roby pursued the thieves to his driveway. As they jumped in a van, Dail opened fire with his pepper spray, a concoction so powerful it's labeled "bear deterrent".

"I hit 'em good," Dail said . "I was right in their window."

"It had to hurt 'em," said Dail. "They were struggling to see as they drove down the road."

Mace Protects Motel Clerk From Robber

A guy walked in up to a motel receptionists and asked for money. The lady receptionists did not budge and told him "no". The guy threatened her with deadly force but instead of compliance from her he got his face full of mace.

After that point his robbery attempt did not go any further, heck no. It's impossible to do anything meaningful when you don't see much, hardly breathing at all and in agonizing pain. That's what pepper spray or Mace does to a person.

CORPUS CHRISTI � A robber had Mace sprayed in his face on Valentine's Day by a motel clerk after he claimed he had a gun, Corpus Christi police said.

Officers were called about 6:30 p.m. to a motel in the 2000 block of North Padre Island Drive after a 26-year-old clerk told police a man walked up to the front desk wearing a ski mask and demanding money.

The clerk refused and when the man said he had a gun, she sprayed Mace in his face, police said.

The robber fled the inn and is described as a Hispanic man, about 5-feet-10 inches to 6-feet-one inch tall and weighing between 170 and 200 pounds.

He was last seen wearing tan overalls and a black ski mask.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-8477.

It took a brave woman, a sober assessment of the situation, and a can of mace to thwart the robbery.
If you followed this blog for any length of time, you've read about many [reported] crimes that were stopped by a simple pepper spray (see here, here, and here for example). We keep publishing them to how you that usually it takes a lot of determination but very little resources to stop a crime.

A crime is a high risk game for the perpetrator -- think walking on thin ice -- and any unforeseen circumstance or event usually derails the whole process. In one-on-one situations a pepper spray or mace canister in your hand will most likely do it.

The City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation and CPVAW started affordable classes to teach women self-defense, how to ward off an attacker, how to use their physical abilities effectively and how to use pepper spray. The Coordinator of this program, Kathy Agnone said what we've been professing for years to all our customers: "if you buy pepper spray or mace or stun gun, you have to practice how to use it and have it available at all times. Otherwise, it will do you no good."

So here is how Kathy Agnone's said that:
�Our philosophy is to teach how to use your body parts and nearby objects to defend yourself. If you�re going to carry pepper spray, you should be trained in how to use pepper spray.
Obviously, if you�re clumsy with your pepper spray this could work against you at the time of an attack.

So yeah, maybe you�re one of those women who considers themselves armed because you bought some pepper spray. Reasonably, you carry it at the bottom of your purse when you go out, or stash it (less reasonably) in your glove box. Or maybe you�re one of those women who thinks she will never be the target of a violent crime.

The more I think about arming myself with pepper spray, the less I want to rely on it to save my ass. A little training on how to turn one's own body parts and nearby objects into weapons of self-defense seems like it would give more peace of mind (and bod) next time I'm walking home alone after dark". That's correct: the new Kimber pepper blaster does resemble a handgun. On purpose. There are no doubts about it. It's a two-edge sword: your attacker will be deterred by the look of it, if the pepper blaster II is mistaken for a pistol. At the same time, a police officer might start treating you differently while thinking you're carrying a firearm. True on both accounts. Is it necessarily bad?

Who would you rather protect yourself against: a criminal or a cop? You better protect yourself against a criminal because there are much more crime perpetrated by thugs than mistakes made by police. There are dozens of rapes and assaults reported everyday but how many erroneous shootings have you heard about lately? Not much.

Like it or leave it.

Pepper Spray Thwarts Robberies In More Ways Than One

In the post yesterday about a robber who for no apparent reason pepper sprayed himself I was ROFLMAO-ing and screaming that "..you can not make this stuff up..".

Guess what: "this stuff" just keep on coming. I giggled it out of my system yesterday, so I can't laugh anymore. Instead, after reading this story from Chicago about yet another store robbery that was thwarted by pepper spray I started wondering: maybe robberies and pepper spray do not mix? Well, read on and let's hear what you say...Here is the story from Chicago:

"Would-Be Robbers Use Pepper Spray in Downtown Old Navy"

Three men attempting to rob a Loop Old Navy store Tuesday by deploying pepper spray fled without stealing anything.

Three men entered a retail store at 35 N. State St. about 7 p.m. and one of them deployed pepper spray or a similar chemical agent on three patrons in an attempted robbery, police said.

The men, between 18 and 21 years old, had no other weapons and fled south on State Street without actually stealing anything, police concluded.

Reportedly, nobody was seriously injured."

Hilarious, we have 3 such botched robberies with pepper spray in a week. What's going on?
Are we seeing more amateurs starting their crime careers?
Whatever the reason is, pepper spray or mace are much better choice as a defensive device and not as an offensive weapon.
Pepper spray, in general, distracts, deters, and slows things down. It's like throwing a HUGE monkey wrench into the crime cogs: it's not perfect but very good for defense and totally inappropriate for offense.
Would-be robbers and offenders everywhere: take heed.

What?! Sprayed Himself With Pepper Spray?

You can't make this stuff up: First there was a report about an attempted robbery of a strip mall hair salon on a slow Monday. The genius behind the heist got his face full of pepper spray from a brave lady customer and could not leave the place fast enough.

Now a new report comes from Idaho about another attempted robbery and how pepper spray saved the day there (Read on...)As reported by De Moines Register here , Council Bluffs police are on the hunt for a robber who sprayed himself with pepper spray.

Police said the robbery happened Jan 19, 2011 at night at a mobile phone store called "Cricket Store".

A guy entered the store, pulled out a gun and made threats to the clerk demanding the daily cash.
After the employee handed him the money, the robber then pulled out a can of pepper spray.
He pressed the release button to spray the clerk but instead sprayed himself in the face. Yes, you read it right: sprayed himself with his own pepper spray.

Guess what his next action was? Why, of course, he ran away. What else could he do with his eyes burning like they are melting and his lungs breathing fire.

Sounds funny? It is. However, you can see what happens with even simple manual movements when you are under stress, pressure, or danger. If they are not automatic through practice, even a simplest act, like pulling your pepper spray canister out, aiming it, or pressing the trigger on the pepper spray could become very cumbersome and error-prone task.

Solution? Practice, practice, practice silly little movements of pulling out your pepper spray, aiming it, spraying it (pretending or for real). Buy two canisters -- pepper spray is cheap -- use one for practice, use another one for self-defense situation.

Another Brave Woman Fends Off Robber With Pepper Spray

It was uneventful Monday in the Hewitt, TX hair salon when a would-be robber stormed in to rob the place. We think there is something pathetic and even pitiful in the very idea to rob a hair salon of all places. It could be that the noticeable desperation of this act empowered a customer, a brave woman, to pull out her pepper spray and (Read on...)
...and gave the attacker a good deal of face spraying. From this point on, the robbery did not progress that well.

The "robber" wore a black ski mask, so only his eyes were exposed. However, some of the spray must've got stuck in the mask's fibers and breathing through it surely hurt like hell. Disoriented and in pain, he left the hair salon hastily and a Pontiac Bonneville picked him up and drove away.

The Police came a tad later to take the eyewitness accounts and report the event.

Needless to say, our sympathies go to the brave woman with the pepper spray. She assessed the situation quickly, did not hesitate much, knew what to do, took a stand, aimed well and fought off the attacker.

If you read the News website where the story was originally reported, do yourself a favor and skip the boring video in the post -- it shows absolutely nothing of interest and value. Instead go the comments section down below and read the opinions and emotions of the local folks. It seems like the people of Hewitt, know their pepper sprays and stun guns and will not hesitate to use them when needed.

Some of them discussed other self-defense options that might come handy when there is nothing else, like wasp spray.
We see a lot of threads on the web with this kind of "advice". Yes, there are lots of chemicals out there that will hurt a human or an animal. The "hurt" quality does not make them automatically a good self-defense weapon.

For starters, the wasp spray is big and unwieldy vs. pepper spray that comes in a neat ergonomic canister that's easy to carry and handle.

Then, the protective quality of other chemicals is unknown vs. well-documented and time-tested heat factor of pepper sprays. Nobody really tested and reported how painful the wasp spray was. And our guess is - nobody will.

Do you know why? Because using those chemical in unintended ways is illegal thing to do, so nobody will be doing this kind of "research" and reporting. Pepper sprays, on the other hand, are intended to be used in self-defense situations and you will be in a much better legal situation after fending off an attack with pepper sprays. You don't need no lawyer calculating damages you perpetrated on your attacker. That's some insult to injury...

It seems like no neighborhood provides immunity to women against assaults. A sexual predator can pull up in a Volvo or in a beat up truck, can emerge from a dark alley or from the Central Park bench. What gives protection to women, times and times again, is simple pepper spray, mace, or stun gun and resolve to use it.

Here is what just being reported from beautiful and warm San Diego:" ..A would-be kidnapper grabbed a jogger on an El Cerrito- area street today but released her when she blinded him with pepper spray, according to San Diego police.

The 26-year-old would-be victim was running in the area of 58th Street and Trojan Avenue about 12:30 p.m. when a blond-haired man who appeared to be in his 30s pulled up next to her in a faded red older-model pickup truck and made several attempts to engage her in conversation.

The woman refused to respond and kept running. When she reached a cul-de-sac in the 4100 block of Olympic Place, the stranger steered into a driveway in front of her, blocking her way, and got out of the vehicle.

The jogger tried to get around the man by running out into the street, but he followed and grabbed her arm forcefully. She then sprayed the pepper spray at his face, prompting him to let her go.

As the woman ran away to call the police, the assailant drove off to the east..."

Here you have it, folks: pepper spray or mace, whatever, does work.
Do you see how simple it was for this woman to get rid of her assailant/kidnapper just by spraying him with her pepper spray?
She was likely scared and shaken but resolute and prepared.
All she needed to do is to take out her spray, face her attacker and press the button.
Then she had time to escape the danger and call the police. Good for her!

Make an oath to carry it and use it instantly when in danger. If you got it for your loved ones, take their word they'll carry it at all times and use it without hesitation.
